Ingredients
For the Biscuit Dough:
-
2½ cups all-purpose flour
-
1 tbsp baking powder
-
1 tbsp granulated sugar
-
1 tsp salt
-
2 cups buttermilk (cold)
-
1½ cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
-
1 cup diced turkey ham
-
½ tsp garlic powder (optional, for flavor boost)
For the Butter Base:
-
½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter
Optional Toppings:
-
1 tbsp chopped fresh chives or parsley (for garnish)
-
Extra shredded cheese for topping
Instructions
Step 1: Preheat & Melt the Butter
-
Preheat your oven to 450°F (232°C).
-
Place the stick of butter in your 9×9 baking dish.
-
Set the dish in the oven while it preheats to melt the butter—about 5-7 minutes. Watch closely to prevent browning.
-
Once melted, carefully remove the dish from the oven and set aside.
Step 2: Make the Biscuit Dough
5. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, sugar, salt, and garlic powder (if using).
6. Stir in the shredded cheddar cheese and diced turkey ham.
7. Pour in the cold buttermilk and stir until just combined. The batter will be thick and sticky—don’t overmix.
Step 3: Assemble the Biscuits
8. Carefully spoon or pour the dough into the buttered baking dish, spreading it out evenly.
9. Use a spatula or knife to score the top of the dough into 9 squares. This helps with even cooking and portioning later.
10. Sprinkle extra cheese or herbs on top if desired.
Step 4: Bake to Golden Perfection
11. Bake in the preheated oven for 25–28 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and a toothpick comes out clean from the center.
12. Let the biscuits cool for about 5 minutes before cutting and serving.
Step 5: Garnish and Serve
13. Sprinkle with chopped fresh chives or parsley for a fresh pop of color.
14. Serve warm as-is, or pair with eggs, soups, or a side salad for a complete meal.
Notes
Use Cold Buttermilk – This keeps the dough tender and helps the biscuits rise beautifully.
Don’t Overmix – Just stir until everything is combined; lumps are okay!
Sharp Cheddar Works Best – It holds up well and brings bold flavor.
Score Before Baking – This ensures even portions and better texture.
Let It Rest – A few minutes of cooling helps the butter settle and makes cutting easier.
